The link to the awesomeness can be found here. It relates to the phrase "we all like to see our friends get ahead, but not too far ahead." Just read the Wikipedia thing. It's pretty short.
Another similar article can be found here. However, I chose to wrote about this because it sortof sounds cooler, and it gave me an excuse to use a picture.
THA GRADE BOOK!
Theoreticality...ness-On a personal scale, the concept of "if I can't have it neither can you" keeps you level with everybody else. Supposedly, this would enable you to get ahead in life, buuut...everybody else is trying to hold you back as well.
Applicability-In an actual situation, this is a terrible idea. The phrase "crab mentality" comes from the concept of several crabs caught in a pot. Instead of helping one another get out, they perpetuate a never-ending game of King of the Hill by constantly fighting to reach the top. In real life, success is near impossible with everyone trying to drag you down. It's easier if you have a team mentality and you're willing to work with others.
Other-The name is pretty cool, and if you mention it in conversation, it sounds like you might know quite a bit about psychology. Just make sure you walk away quickly after you say it. You're probably better off not being tested on the rest of your psychology knowledge.
INTERMISSION
I'm not a big fan of seafood, but I know some people try to order crab cakes. Let me warn you: there's no actual cake involved. Don't be taken in by such a simple scam.
FINAL GRADE: F
Crab mentality is a terrible idea. You're better off working with others than fighting through your enemies. There's a reason the crabs never make it out of the pot.

"Crab mentality"...very nice. I like your interpretation and grade.
ReplyDeleteWhen read the Wikipedia article the first thing I thought was "it sounds like something Ayn Rand would accuse socialism of." I find that very funny, for some reason.
